Helpful Tips to remove and avoid Tear Stains

We get asked a lot on how we tackle tear stain problem. So here is a detailed write up:

Tear stains is caused by a reddish brown yeast. This yeast can only survive in a dog's hair when there is enough moisture/water. The yeast usually grow near the eyes that shed tears excessively. This yeast will spread and will cause more irritation if left untreated. This same yeast can also be found on the legs if the dog's feet has been wet (probably from stepping his/her urine) and is not completely dried.

To stop tear stain, we have to look at what causes the excessive tearing. Because normal dogs do not shed tear or cry in excess and their tears usually dry up fast.

The answer is in the chemical used in the shampoo. Many commercial dog shampoos contain surfactants and lathering agents, both irritate the eyes and skin. Most of them also irritate human skin. Try immersing your hand in the dog shampoo for 5 mins to test. If your hand feels pain after 2 min or so, then that shampoo contain harsh chemical and your dog will feel that pain too!

So how to remove and avoid tear stain?
There is no way to remove the yeast that already lives in the hair other than to cut the hair. We recommend this step to prevent the spread of the yeast.

Next is to use a shampoo that is gentle on the eyes. Our shampoo does not contain chemicals that irritate the eyes nor the skin. It is very safe to use.

Do not use "whitening shampoo". This has bleaching chemicals which are even worse as they irritate the eyes and skin even more. In the short term the hair will look white but in the long term, the hair will be rough due to the bleaching.

That is how we removed tear stains. Our maltese, Mimi, used to have this problem and this was our way in dealing with tear stain. We have tried anti tear stain solutions and pills and they do not even work. They do not solve the fundamental problem.

So this is Mimi our Maltese. We use Silky Dog Shampoo, an invention we create ourselves for all our dogs.
